My sculptures began as an investigation of the role of categorization, organization and modularity
within the identity of space. This exploration comes from having lived
in many different places and environments. Some of the situations I
create reference natural phenomena, such as erosion and the strata of
the Earth; some look at the manner in which humans use architecture and
suburban planning to mark space as their own. It is the point of
encounter between human space and natural space that fascinates me.

Through exploration of images from myths, fairy
tales and the natural world, Susan’s egg tempera paintings describe a
world full of dualities and delicate tensions. Her work is
simultaneously detailed and stark, bold and ethereal. The elements in
her paintings interact not only on a basic visual level, but also as
symbols, archetypes that bring their own meanings.
